You should never drive fast in snowy or icy conditions. If there is snow sticking to the roads, let off the gas and take it slow. Everyone on the road will be better off if people simply slow down when there is snow involved. You never know where they may be a patch of black ice lurking on the road. If you aren’t moving very fast, you will be able to handle whatever comes your way.
Cruise Control is Unsafe on Slippery Road Surfaces
You shouldn’t ever used cruise control when you are doing winter driving. You don’t have as much control over your vehicle when it is set at a certain speed. You will likely be taking corners much slower than you normally would, and it’s best that you are ready with cruise control off.
Keep a Safe Distance when Driving in Snow
It may be tempting to follow that vehicle in front of you closely. Maybe it will help them speed up a bit. When there is snow on the road, this is a bad idea. You won’t have the same reaction time in the case that you need to slow down when there is snow and ice on the road. You may find that the driver in front of you has to stop abruptly and your tires may not have the same traction they would if there weren’t snow on the road. With enough space, even if your car slides a little, you want to have time to correct your vehicle without coming in contact with the car in front of you.
Check Weather Along Driving Route
Before you set out on your road trip, look at the weather. You may not want to chance it if there is going to be snowy conditions. You may be better off waiting a day or two until a storm passes, or at least enough time to give the snowplows time to clear the roads for you before leaving.
